The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) today announced the appointment of Dr Andrew Norton as director. Dr Norton will take up his role as IIED director on 29 June, 2015. He has more than 30 years' experience: several years' field experience in Western, Eastern and Southern Africa, South Asia and the Caribbean, as well as in roles at the World Bank and the UK Department for International Development (DFID). He comes to IIED during a critical year for environment and development.

Researchers, community representatives, United Nations and government officials and NGOs have issued a set of recommendations on engaging communities in combating the illegal wildlife trade. The recommendations come on the eve of World Wildlife Day on 3 March.

The UK parliament's Environmental Audit Committee has warned in a new report that the government risks undermining new global development goals, following evidence that the UK has been seeking to limit their scope and ambition. IIED submitted evidence to the committee that the government's position on the Sustainable Development Goals threatened the universal scope of the goals

An international seminar in Costa Rica on 5 September looked at the economic contribution of marine and coastal ecosystem services to the regional economy. Key stakeholders from government, academic institutions, national and international organisations demonstrated the importance of marine and coastal ecosystems and looked at the implications for decision making.

Six Chinese journalists who won fellowships to explore the growing links between China and Africa will share their experiences at a meeting in Beijing on 21 March. The 10-day fellowships have been organised by a China-based think tank with support from IIED. The 7th International Conference on Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change will take place in Dhaka on 22-25 April. Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will open the conference, and the former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, will give the keynote speech in the closing session
